What is a graduate internship?
A graduate internship is a unique opportunity to have graduate calibre employees work in a business for a short period of time. Each internship will be expected to last around 12 weeks and graduates can be expected to work on all different types of projects or jobs. Businesses will provide full time work on projects at their discretion.
What is in it for employers?
This is your opportunity to access fresh university calibre talent who can generate new ideas and improve your business performance in the tough economic climate.
If you get involved, Brunel University may provide you with a subsidy to help fund the internship.
What is in it for graduates?
Graduates will gain work experience and improve their employability skills - some businesses may decide to keep graduates on for more work after the internship finishes. For other graduates, it may just be a unique insight into a business or career path.
Which businesses can take part and how long are the internships?
Eligible businesses are those that are either;
- A small business (less than 50 employees), OR
- Have between 50-250 employees and are FSB registered OR
- Any sized business that can classify itself as working in the following sectors (low carbon products and services / digital industry / life sciences and pharmaceuticals / advanced manufacturing / professional and financial services / engineering construction / opportunities in the ageing services industry)
Businesses must meet ONE of the above criteria and commit to providing specific internship project or work for a period of around 12 weeks.
How are graduates matched to internship opportunities?
Brunel University has a dedicated team of recruitment specialists who will attract, sift and forward appropriate graduate candidates to businesses registered on this scheme. Businesses will then select the best graduate/s for their internship/s. Businesses can take on one or more graduate internships, which must be completed before September 2010.

I work with many local professional women and would like to publicise it in my network of contacts. Please can you offer more detail on the ‘ subsidy’ that may be offered to small businesses. Many of the women in my Berkshire network are small businesses of less than 5 people, so subsidies will make it more appealing
Thanks

Hello Debbie,
Yes, the subsidy will equate to £1200 per graduate that is placed on an internship. We require all internships to be paid at least national minimum wage (£5.80p/hr) and at a minimum of 30 hours per week for 12 weeks. The subsidy will therefore cover about half of the total wage bill for the graduate. Please let me know if you members are interested by contacting me on charlie.leake@brunel.ac.uk or 01895 267 836.
Thanks,
Charlie
